Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I am currently enrolled in UWO in the doctorate in education program, within the executive cohort focusing on organizational leadership. I am currently the Director for Indigenous Health at the BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre. Postsecondary education has opened so many opportunities for me. In 5 years I see myself on this path continuing to promote system change to appropriately respond to Indigenous peoples.

What was the most important connection you made?

As an Indigenous person in a leadership role, the most important connection I have made has been the connection to culture. Culture is important in guiding my path and directions in my career. Embedding my cultural identity and values keeps me grounded, and keeps me accountable to the Indigenous community for which I do this work.

What was the best advice that you received?

Don't take life too seriously. Accept life as it comes. Make sure to set time for fun with family and friends, and time aside for yourself and enjoy what you are doing.

What is your best memory from your time at UBC?

I met a lot of great people during my time at UBC. I developed some great friendships with cohorts and professors who are still part of my network to this day.

What did you think you would be doing when you started university?

I started my first degree program at UBC in the Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work Program in 2001. At the time I was 21 years old and unsure of what exactly I wanted to do or where I wanted to work, all I knew was as an Indigenous person I wanted to work for Indigenous communities. After completing this program, many opportunities opened up. This undergrad led me to completing my MSW through UVic, and now I am enrolled in the doctorate in education program with UWO. The start of these opportunities stemmed from my time and experiences at UBC.
