Roderic Frame Sexsmith, BASc’45

Roderic Frame Sexsmith, scion of the Richmond, BC, founding family, died on October 7, 2015, at the residence of his son in Courtenay. Rod was born in Vancouver on March 15, 1921. He spent his early years in Richmond and later called Vancouver home. He spent his summers working on his grandparent’s Lulu Island farm. Rod graduated from Magee High in 1940 and from UBC as a Chemical Engineer in 1945. He was the first UBC graduate whose parents had both graduated from UBC (F.F.B. Sexsmith, BA’16, and E.M. Frame BA’18).

Upon graduation Rod went to work for the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) in the Persian Gulf where he stayed for 15 years. On a visit home in 1951 Rod met and married the love of his life and soul mate Una Mary Young. Una was a Canadian Pacific Airlines pioneer working as the Supervisor of International Reservations who gave up her career to make a life with her husband in the Middle East. Rod transferred to Texaco Canada in 1960. He worked in Edmonton and Montreal and retired to Victoria in 1976. Una predeceased Rod on March 19, 2002.

Rod and Una are survived by their children: Julia, Susan (Pat), John (Linda) and Pam (Steve); 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Interment, family plot Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver.
