Kashmir, India (2016) – Sometimes my voyeurism is trumped, and the result is even better than capturing the subject unawares. This was an ultra-zoom shot in the exquisite Nishat Bagh Garden in Srinagar, Kashmir. As happens pretty often, only when I viewed it later on my laptop did I realize that she’d been quite aware I was photographing her, and a glint of humour is evident in those unforgettable eyes. Kashmiri women enjoy considerably more independence than most in India, and I think that’s reflected in her expression and easy posture. Several people have told me the shot reminds them of that famous National Geographic cover of the Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula.
