Lens on Life – Rwanda – Genocide Survivor (Juliette)

Murambi, Rwanda (2012) – I met Juliette Mukakabanda as I was walking away from a quite overwhelming visit to the Murambi genocide memorial in Rwanda, which you can see in the background. It’s the only genocide site where the exhumed and lime-shrouded bodies of victims of the 1994 holocaust are still on open display. Juliette told me, in French, her story of surviving the carnage at Murambi. It turned out we were the same age, and I thought: There but for the grace of God … The radiance of Juliette’s features, and her dazzling dress, seem to me a kind of victory over the forces that sought to destroy her.
