Negombo, Sri Lanka (2014) – I don’t spend a lot of time in warzones – I’d like to stay alive for a while yet. But I visit many countries in which mass violence still reverberates. Sri Lanka has been riven by civil wars for decades, and is only now in a fragile state of peace. In the town of Negombo, I witnessed a scuffle between two angry young men. It was instructive to witness how other men in the market moved immediately to defuse the situation and restrain the antagonists, who I think were counting on the intervention.
