Piano and Erhu Project
Dr. Corey Hamm, Associate Professor of Piano and Chamber Music and Nicole Ge Li, Concert Master of the B.C. Chinese Orchestra introduce listeners to their instruments (piano and erhu, respectively), providing an opportunity to see and hear each instrument and how they work to create various traditional and exotic sonorities. Composers Keith Hamel, Dorothy Chang, Robert Prithcard, and Edward Top describe and discuss together the creative process and challenges they have faced in writing for this new duo fusing instruments from east and west. One composer for this project has stated: “This ensemble does not only comprise of instruments, but iconic cultural objects: the erhu and the piano both signal their cultures strongly. In writing for this ensemble, one is not only confronted with the standard range and dynamic parameters of the instruments, but the relationship between China and the West.
